The Blessed Sebastiano Valfrè

Sebastiano Valfrè was born in Verduno in 1629. A priest of the Congregation of the Oratory, he established the Church of S. Filippo di Torino (omitted), which became the focal point for communicating his religious and cultural message. Don Bosco named him the "Apostle of Turin" for his work to fight poverty, especially during the siege of 1706. Chaplain and confessor of Vittorio Amedeo II, he is known as the saint of assistance and collaborative working.
Legend has it that this saint brought the first Pelaverga vine cuttings to Verduno, thus introducing this prestigious wine to the territory.
He died in Turin in 1710.

Husband and Wife Egidio Cassina and Olimpia Dentis

He, a beloved mayor for long periods of the 1800s, she, a benefactor of the homeless, Egidio Cassina and Olimpia Dentis were, according to the Fantini, admired by wine growers in the second half of the nineteeth century for their exemplary use of the Guyot system in their vineyards.

Lieutenant Giovan Battista Laneri

Lieutentent Laneri was a martyr of the piedmontese uprisings of 1821. He was born in Verduno in 1777. After a swift trial in which he was accused of supporting the March insurrection, he was executed on July 21, 1821. Of the 103 insurgents sentenced to death, only he, along with Giacomo Garelli and Fedele Rosanino, were executed. His status as lieutenant in the royal military weighed heavily on his shoulders, perhaps along with his rank as second lieutenant of the Hussars at the time of Napoleon’s defeat in 1814. An 1886 plaque on the town hall commemorates him as a "selfless victim of National Independence".

Hugo Novo

Hugo Novo, known by the stage name of "Ugo of Verduno", was one of the greatest folk singers of the Langhe.
Novo was born in La Morra in 1914 but moved with his family to Verduno.
He began to teach himself music fundamentals, after which he attended specialized schools and at last became a music teacher.
After the war he taught in the Don Gnocchi School for amputees in Turin.
During the 1970s, he founded the band "The Mosaic" and began to compose music and lyrics. During that time, he also worked in television and radio. He loved to sing about the simplicity and hard work of the people of Langa, his homeland.
Among his compositions, he is most remembered for:
• "Viva la trifula-Barolina";
• "Ugo d’Verdun e il suo Langa ieri": a collection of songs that recount living and being connected with country life;
• "Viva il Balun", a ballad dedicated to the “pallone elastico” or “elastic ball”, an event typical of the region as well as the game’s great champions, from Manzo and Balestra to Bertola and Berruti.
• "Inno al Beato Sebastiano Valfré”
He died in Verduno in 1992.
